My 2023 Surly DiscTrucker: A Brutally Honest Review
The Surly Disc Trucker is one of the more popular touring bikes on the road today. I purchased a new Disc Trucker in 2023. I modified and upgraded some of the parts to suit my needs and tested it out under a variety of conditions. I took it fully loaded on paved and gravel roads, rail-trails and canal towpaths. I'm not a professional bike mechanic, just a seasoned long-distance bike tourist that knows what he likes. And this is my brutally honest review of the bike.

Dirty South Roubaix Bicycle Race in Southern Illinois
Просмотров 10 тыс.3 месяца назад
The Dirty South Roubaix is a bicycle race in Southern Illinois that starts and ends in Alto Pass. Over 700 riders from all over showed up on a foggy morning to tackle either the 100K or 50K race course. I'm not a racer, so I sat this one out. But my friend and fellow RUclipsr Shawn, from "Hiking With Shawn" braved the 50K race. The sun came out, burned off the fog and a sunny day was had by all.

While out bike touring, my backyard wildlife trail camera never rests. It's always ready with motion sensors to capture video footage of any creature that happens to amble by. So even when out on the road, I can still get some awesome wildlife footage in my own backyard. Here are some of the animals that walked haplessly into my camera trap. Even though I'm done bike touring for the season and ...
Cycling the Grand Illinois Loop

The Grand lllinois Loop is an 535 mile bicycle route in northern Illinois from the Chicagoland area out to the Mississippi River and back again. The route follows mostly bike path, either rail-trail or canal towpath. But some of the route is on paved roads shared by cars. Most of these roads are quiet back country roads with light traffic. I started in the Western Suburbs in the town of Carol S...

Join me as I ride my bicycle north from Milwaukee, Wisconsin along the shoreline of Lake Michigan up to Door County. From Green Bay I ventured west on the Mountain Bay Trail about 80 miles or so to Weston. From Weston I turned south to Madison...

A Tale of Two Rail Trails in West Virginia

In June of 2023, I went to West Virginia to ride some Rail Trails. The Greenbrier River Trail and the North Bend Trail were on my list. Which trail do you prefer? Both are historic trails. I currently ride an Electra Townie 7D. It is a great bike for riding flat level ground. However, I want to bike a portion of the Natchez Trace Parkway as a “Bucket List” item. I want to work up to this. My plan is to identify a 20-60 mile stretch that has gentle, rolling slopes that I might ride with my current bike, but realize that at some point I might have to upgrade to a hybrid bike. I was wondering if you might suggest a training program that would culminate in a 30 mile/day ride. My thinking has been to work slowly toward building my stamina to ride 10 miles in 1:15-1:30 minutes and that that might allow me to break a day’s ride into 3 10-mile stretches with generous rest between each stretch. Does that seem reasonable? At present, I can comfortably ride 7-8 miles in 50 minutes. I would appreciate any advice you might offer. By the way, I’m 74 years old (older, but NOT old).

It looks comfortable. At 61 my MTB flat handlebars caused me issues. I opted for a 40 deg swept back style and have found it more comfortable on my shoulders and hands. I'm more interested in riding all terrain aside from extreme off road. Your new bike has caught my eyes and idea's! thank you! Rails to trails route in Wisconsin looks appealing to me.

I've been stealth camping on the side of the road for 12 years. Got about 15,000 miles of touring in and I commute everywhere too. Excited to get going from Billings, MT through the cascades, down to the red woods and yosemite. It's about 2500 miles and I'll be starting on July 14 at age 36. Got some new goodies for this tour: coolibar sun gloves, a 64 oz insulated water jug that i put on my frame, a ridewithgps subscription, a 3 pound macbook air to work on the road, and a kiting paraglider to practice ground handling for paragliding. Now to get my gearing, brakes and chain all set, and I'll be ready to go. Might even document it and try to sell the way I live my life to the social media gods like Paul here. At least I hope he made some money from this :) P.S. get yourself some marathon supreme tires. What a quiet dependable ride they give! And even though they have no tread which makes them fast on pavement, the 2 inch width gives you nice traction on dirt roads

Want to end close rear passes, like deliberate close passes...... definitely get and use a mirror. It's disturbing though the number of vehicles you'll observe suddenly move to give you room when they notice your actually watching them in your mirror. Turns out just removing their capability of surprise entirely defeats the motivation to even attempt a close pass for shits and giggles. I incorrectly assumed I'd still be observing attempted deliberate close passes (inches) in the erogotec mirror I installed. Before installation deliberate close pass occurred every 3-4 weeks and it seemed like there was a competition going as to who could get closest. Not anymore. Not a single one for more than a year now and I'm riding more not less. Thanks to the FORD EXPLORER driver that removed all the fun for everyone else. Less than a couple of inches, really rattled me....but No one is ever sneaking up and getting that close behind me ever again.

I lived by the Greenbrier at Spring Creek when i was a kid. There was a little train that made a daily run between Cass and Roncevert. It hauled the mail and one boxcar, sometime a flatbed car with logs and a passenger car. We could ride between Roncevert and Renick for ten cents.

Lots of great tips in this video, especially about dogs. The title could just be renamed to cycling rather than touring because the situations are very common in everyday riding. Don’t unnecessarily go into the centre of the road but in general I like leaving a small margin by the side of the road to prepare for side gusts, pot holes, anything which means you have to go off the road, there isn’t always a grassy verge.

Honestly, my 2 favorite Surlys were the Troll and Long Haul Trucker because I refer 26" wheels and V-brakes, so I'm glad that the Disc Trucker is at least offered w/ 26" wheels on the smaller frames, which I may get in the Pea Lime Soup paint color for visibility sake, or maybe the Bridge Club w/ 700c wheels. 🤢 Keep on Disc Trucking, Paul!

Hilarious insights! I'm in Pasadena, in California outside LA, and I understand what you say about high elevations and long hills...🤣 Also my attitude about drivers is... always assume they are looking at their phone, not the road. By the way, I suggest you try bike touring in Taiwan. It's great. I have done it. Here's a small point about how it might change your thinking: police stations in Taiwan have air and water for cyclists. Imagine thinking the police station was a friendly place! That's the kind of attitude change the place can inspire...

Man, dog owners, traffic and the kind of antagonizing nonsense you see with that... the worst enemy with cycling always has been other folks ruining your day it seems. If I didn't live in a country where I can virtually cross every state on dedicated cycling roads alone, I'd not be an outdoor cyclist, period. There is no joy in riding big roads to me, and better asphalt doesn't make up for it either. Beyond just the traffic concern, open, wide roads really take away from that sense of speed you get with vection, like all the shrubbery and foliage rushing by fairly closely feels very different from when your frame of reference barely seems to be moving at all. I can't wait for a future where robo fleets are mandatory, and the human element is discarded, I am absolutely livid thinking about how many people don't even bother fully crossing the middle of the road before overtaking cyclists. Heck, somehow all of them feel like they have to tailgate you right until the very last moment, like your SUV is going to take advantage of riding in my frail bike's slipstream. Not conforming to those basic traffic rules should get your license revoked permanently, you're just another human waiting to kill a group of riders because they couldn't bear to take it slow in a discovered curve.

  • @jaydee975
    @jaydee975 17 дней назад

Actually, historic fact that branch section down to Harmony used to continue east through Canton, Mabel and over to Caledonia. That section of track was abandoned by the Milwaukee Road, about five years before the other section of Railroad was abandoned. Also note before you get to County Road 8 in fountain, the trail veers sharply to the left which is not on the old railroad grade. The old railroad grade crossed County Road 6 and curved right into downtown fountain.

  • @jaydee975

There are sections near Houston and near Harmony that are not on the old Railroad grade because of stubborn landowners refused to let the DNR convert the old railroad grade into a trail. That unfortunately happens in places.
